Nearly every anime fan has his/her own opinion when it comes to the subject of which is better, Japanese voices with subtitles or English dubbed anime. I believe I have watched more than enough to be able to give my opinion on the topic and this is just what I’ll do.
Note: My opinion is nothing special and I’m sure many anime fans have the same or similar opinion on this topic. However, I want to voice it nonetheless.
I mainly watch anime in their native language of Japanese. My reason for watching anime in Japanese is simply, because I believe that in most cases Japanese voices and language fit the shows more than English voices and language. Most anime take place in Japan so I think that the experience is more natural when those characters speak Japanese (e.g. Death Note) and it makes it more immerse for me. Of course there are several anime that take place outside of Japan or in alternate worlds (e.g. Fullmetal Alchemist) where I believe English language and voices fit more for that very reason, especially when the character’s have English names.
My stance on Subs vs. Dubs is rather simple; I’m stuck in limbo, unwilling to choose either side. I watch the majority of anime in Japanese, because I’m impatient, unwilling to wait several months for English dub to come around (if it’s in the works) and like to immerse myself in the shows I watch. However, if the English dub is already available, it’s very likely I’ll give it priority unless I know for a fact that it’s poorly done (older shows) or the show’s setting is Japan.
I enjoy specific anime, because of its story, visuals and music and not because of the language the characters are conversing in. I think that more people should do just that and stop arguing which is better, because in the end it doesn’t matter in which language you watch it in, as long as you understand and enjoy the content.
