My Thoughts: Sword Art Online II

My Thoughts: Sword Art Online II

When I saw Sword Art Online II being simulcasted over at Crunchyroll few months back, I was jumping and screaming like my niece when she received a One Direction T-Shirt for her birthday present (I’m a bad uncle, aren’t I…). As you can tell, I’m a fan of Sword Art Online despite the fact that the first season’s second half was a little wonky.

Note: Some minor spoilers ahead. Read at your own discretion.

I had pretty big expectations for the second season of the anime, especially due to everyone hyping me up by saying that Gun Gale Online (GGO) story arc is one of the best in the light novel series. I can now happily say that I wasn’t disappointed…Too much.

Death Gun

Let me explain. The GGO arc was phenomenal and I now know why it’s considered to be the best Sword Art Online story arc so far. I was a bit disappointed when I learned that the second season will not end with the said arc, because I was afraid that the next arc will be as wonky as the ALfheim Online (ALO) arc was in the first season.

My fear was somewhat realized, because I disliked the second third of the season quite a bit, it was too cliche and highly unlikely. As if Game Masters wouldn’t notice that there’s a quest which will destroy the game if it’s not completed, especially since we’re talking about a paid game which definitely has people monitoring it nearly 24/7.

Luckily for me, the season didn’t end there and it continued with the Mother’s Rosario story arc which was pretty decent. I enjoyed the fact that for once we focused on Asuna rather than Kirito who (let’s admit it) is a pretty dull character (at least in the anime series). I loved the interactions between Asuna and the Sleeping Knights guild and the story as a whole was very lovely, even though pretty depressing at times (the feels!). All in all, the last arc of the second season was good enough to keep the anime’s rating at 8 out of 10 when it comes to story.

That being said. I have to rant about the very weird false-ending to the last episode that left me asking all kinds of questions in my head. Just before the episode ending we get some shocking information and after the episode ending is finished our heroes are having a picnic and acting as if that information was never given to them or as if they couldn’t care less.

Sword Art Online II

Even though I disliked the false-ending and characters acting like that piece of information was never given to them, it didn’t break the anime for me (unlike Mahou Sensou).

Overall I really enjoyed watching the second season of Sword Art Online, probably even more than the first one. I already knew the characters and because the GGO arc was just too awesome to describe. I’m definitely hoping for a couple of OVA and a possible third season if there’s any material to work with, which I have no idea if there is any since I haven’t read the light novels yet.

What are your thoughts on the second season of Sword Art Online? Do you think that it was better than the first season or was it so horrible that it shouldn’t be spoken about ever again?
