Most Heart Wrenching Moments In Anime

Clannad: After Story

There are many sad moments in anime, especially if the anime has characters that we grew to love over the course of the anime. Some of these sad moments are listed below and are in my opinion the most heart wrenching moments that anime has to offer.

Note: The article contains a lot of major spoilers for the majority of mentioned anime. Read at your own discretion.

Death of Maes Hughes (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Maes Hughes uncovers the truth behind the Ishvalan civil war as well as every other major war in which Amestris participated in. He is approached by Lust moments after he uncovers these dark Amestrian secrets. Lust tries to kill him, but Maes manages to escape. He decides to contact Roy Mustang and explain the situation, but is apprehended by Envy who takes a form of his wife and shoots him when Maes hesitates to kill Envy due to his trickery.

Death of Mikasa Ackerman’s parents (Shingeki no Kyojin)

Mikasa lost her parents to human traffickers who targeted her and her mother due to being the last two Asian people in the world, making them very valuable to slave traders. Her father was killed the very moment he opened the door to see who’s knocking and her mother is killed shortly after, trying to protect Mikasa from the intruders. Mikasa is taken hostage and is planned to be sold as a slave. Luckily the main protagonist of the anime (Eren Jaeger) rescues her by killing the traffickers, with help from Mikasa herself. She is warmly welcomed into the Jaeger family by Eren and his father shortly after.

Death of Nagisa Okazaki (Clannad: After Story)

Nagisa was, as a child, diagnosed with an unknown disease which makes her sick rather often and for extended periods of time. When Tomoya (her husband) and Nagisa manage to conceive a child, the pregnancy doesn’t go as planned. She dies moments after giving birth to their daughter Ushio.

Death of Shirley Fenette (Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2)

Shirley’s memory of Lelouch being Zero has been locked away, but she manages to remember everything after a period of time. She’s in love with Lelouch, so she decides to support him, but runs into Rolo who believes that Shirley wants to assassinate Lelouch. Rolo convinced of that decides to use his Geass power to inflict a mortal gun wound to Shirley. Shirley is soon found by Lelouch who desperately tries to use his Geass power to save her (ordering her to live) to no avail. Shirley dies while being held by crying Lelouch.

Kanade Tachibana’s Passing (Angel Beats)

Kanade was stuck in the afterlife, because she wanted to thank the person who extended her life by giving her his/her heart. Through the course of the anime, Kanade and Otonashi get closer and closer to one another, eventually falling in love. Otonashi decides to stay in the afterlife after everyone else decides to pass on. He asks Kanade to stay with him, but she refuses and tells him why she was in the afterlife in the first place. Otonashi is left in tears after she disappears.

Disappearance of Fuko Ibuki (Clannad)

Fuko is lying in the hospital in a coma. Due to her condition she was never able to fulfill her dreams. Nagisa and Tomoya meet Fuko, not knowing that she’s a spirit. Through the course of several episodes Nagisa and Tomoya learn of Fuko’s accident and decide to help her fulfill her dream of her sister marrying her love. Fuko’s spiritual power is fading due to Fuko dying in the hospital, causing less and less people being able to see her, last of them being Nagisa and Tomoya. Fuko disappears shortly after congratulating her sister on the marriage and thanking Tomoya for everything he’s done for her.

Death of Van Hohenheim (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Hohenheim is the father of Alphonse and Edward Elric. He abandoned the boys at a very young age, because his body was starting to show the signs of decay. After Edward manages to bring his brother’s soul and body back, he finally manages to see and greet his youngest son; Alphonse. Hohenheim returns to Resembool and passes away with a smile on his face, in front of his love’s grave.

Death of Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2)

Lelouch becomes ruler of the world by taking over Demonicles and as the ruler of the world he arranges a public execution of the Black Knights and U.F.N. representatives. Beforehand he asks Suzaku to disguise himself as Zero and assassinate him during that public execution. Lelouch dies smiling knowing that all of the oppression and hate will die along with him. Nunnally watches how Zero assassinates her brother Lelouch in shock. She takes his hand and suddenly realizes that everything that Lelouch has done was for her sake and her dream of world peace.

Death of L Lawliet (Death Note)

Light Yagami’s memories of being Kira return when he touches the Death Note after Higuchi is apprehended. Light kills Higuchi on the spot to make sure that he doesn’t blabber anything to L or the police. He soon tricks Rem into killing L, making her believe that she must kill L for the sake of Misa’s life. Just moments before L’s life comes to an end, he shows him his evil grin making L aware that he was right all along about Light being Kira.

Death of Ushio Okazaki (Clannad: After Story)

Just like her mother, Ushio is diagnosed with a strange disease and spends several months in bed being taken care of by her father, Tomoya. Most likely feeling that she’s going to die, she makes a request of her father to go on a trip again with him and after some persuasion, Tomoya agrees. She refuses to be carried and walks by her father’s side for some time, struggling to step forward. She eventually stumbles and is caught by Tomoya before she falls to the ground. She dies in father’s hands and Tomoya having lost everything dear to him cries out in despair.

BONUS: Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai

This entire anime makes sure that you feel the sadness that the characters are experiencing at any given time. I’ve decided not to give any information on this anime, since it would require me to spoil the entire anime and I don’t want to do that. That being said, I definitely recommend checking Anohana out, you won’t be disappointed.
